Quote...

"May I take this opportunity to encourage State Parties to nominate suitable women candidates to allow for fair representation of female and male judges on the (ICC) as the Rome Statute requires? Let us not thwart some of the most important advances on gender justice that are embodied in the Statute by failing to act in practical ways to implement them."

- Sergio Vieira de Mello,
UN High Commissioner
for Human Rights
to the 3rd Committee
of the UN General Assembly
4 November 2002

The elections of judges, prosecutor and deputy prosecutors of the International Criminal Court will be a critical first step toward the Court's establishment and functioning. As the first highly visible public act of this new institution, the elections must yield a panel of judges that is regionally diverse and which has a 'fair representation' of women and men judges as required by the Rome Statute.
