Snapshot of Our Work

Since the organisation was established in January 2004 we have:

  • Developed effective and dynamic working relationships with each of the organs of the Court and key decision-makers within the ICC;
  • Trained all three investigation teams in the Office of the Prosecutor (Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Darfur) and provided gender training for staff working on victims and witnesses within the Registry. 
  • Produced a substantial Gender Training Handbook for our gender training seminars with the ICC
  • Named amongst the final nominees for the Peter Gruber Human Rights Award for our work with women most affected by conflict and in providing an effective ‘gender watch’ for the ICC
  • Launched a Global Recruitment Campaign to increase the appointments of women to the Court and to monitor the ICC’s implementation of the Rome Statute principles of gender expertise, fair representation of men and women, and regional representation in the recruitment of staff. Since the launch of the campaign we have seen a quantifiable increase in the appointment of women to professional posts at the ICC;
  • Successfully campaigned for the election of a woman to the post of Deputy Prosecutor (Head of Prosecutions);
  • Successfully lobbied for the establishment of a gender legal advisor role within the Office of the Prosecutor;
  • Produced outreach resources in three languages for victims/survivors of armed conflicts where the ICC is investigating, on the rights of victims and witnesses under the Rome Statute (Information Card Series: Rights and the Rome Statute)
  • Conducted field consultations and awareness raising activities with women’s NGOs, victims groups, community leaders in Northern Uganda and advocated for gender based crimes to be included in the ICC investigations and indictments on the Ugandan conflict;
  • Developed contacts with women’s groups in the DRC, produced resources on victims rights under the Rome Statute (French), and advocated for inclusion of gender  based crimes in the ICC investigations in the DRC;
  • Successfully advocated for the first investigations in Darfur to include gender based crimes;
  • Launched the ‘Gender Lecture Series’ to provide provocative and stimulating presentations to the Court on current gender justice issues;
  • Advocated for gender issues in the development of the ICC Trust Fund for Victims;
  • Provided significant and substantive feedback on institutional policies of the ICC;
  • Provided substantive advice and feedback to the OTP on the Interviewing of Victims of Sexual Violence during investigative missions.
  • Brought together delegations of women activists to advocate on gender issues at the Assembly of States Parties;
  • Co-organised public panels to highlight sexual violence and gender crimes in armed conflicts
  • Produced the Gender Report Card
  • Co-hosted an art exhibition and launch of a documentary on the experiences of child soldiers specifically girl soldiers in the conflicts in Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Initiated two major research projects (including field visits) on Gender and Reparations; and an academic partnership researching ‘Complementarity’ – domestic implementation of the Rome Statute
