In October 2000, the United Nations
Security Council held a debate on “Women, Peace and Security” which
resulted in Resolution 1325 which recognizes the need to include women at all
levels of peace negotiations and conflict resolution and affirms the need for
accountability for war-time violence against women. This achievement came
after much hard work by women’s groups at different points in the history of
the United Nations and after the intensive urging of the NGO Working Group on
Women, Peace and Security which formed in June 2000.
